Toward illiberal secularisms in Western francophone societies

Secularism is never pure or perfect. It moves forward or recedes with the advances and setbacks in liberal democracy. Yet, especially in French-speaking societies, traditional liberal schemes of secularism are being reinterpreted, leading to particularized versions of secularism that are increasingly associated with the defense of inherited national identities.

David Koussens est professeur à la Faculté de droit de l’Université de Sherbrooke où il est titulaire de la Chaire de recherche Droit, religion et laïcité. Ses travaux analysent la pluralité des discours sur le religieux et sur la laïcité, ainsi que leurs médiations juridiques dans plusieurs espaces francophones. Il mène ses recherches au Centre de recherche Société, Droit et Religion de l’Université de Sherbrooke (SoDRUS) et au Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité et la démocratie (CRIDAQ). Il est également membre associé à l’étranger du Groupe-Sociétés-Religions-Laïcités du CNRS. Il a publié Secularism(s) in Contemporary France (Springer, 2023) et L’épreuve de la neutralité (Bruylant, 2015). Il a récemment codirigé Le paradoxe évangélique (Presses de l’Université Laval, 2022), Religion, Law and the Politics of Ethical Diversity (Routledge, 2021) et Nouveaux vocabulaires de la laïcité (Classiques Garnier, 2020). Il est vice-président de la Corporation canadienne des sciences religieuses.
